This Was The Breakthrough In My Burnout Recovery

Throughout my burnout recovery journey, I tried numerous strategies. Mindfulness, nature walks, therapy, a healthy lifestyle, meditation, and even bubble baths (yes, those too—don’t cringe). While many of these practices offered some relief, something crucial was still missing. That missing element turned out to be the game-changer for me. I refer to it as radical self-love (again, don’t cringe, just hear me out).

Radical Self-Love

It might sound overly idealistic, but bear with me as I explain. Radical self-love means taking an afternoon off work when you’re feeling unwell, but then extending that time to two days to fully recover and rest. It’s asking someone to drive you directly to your home instead of just your neighborhood. It’s daring to go all out for what you truly need. It’s about taking the utmost care of yourself that you can imagine.

This radical self-love made the most significant impact on my recovery. Why? Not only because I began getting more rest, care, and comfort, but because by demanding it, I was cultivating a different relationship with myself. A relationship where I mattered, where I loved myself, and where my actions reflected that I deserved the best. This mindset shift was the key to my recovery.

I frequently speak with women experiencing burnout, and many of them are missing this aspect. They struggle to give themselves permission to prioritize their needs. Many women have been socialized to put others first and care for themselves last. When I introduce the concept of radical self-love, they often seem puzzled, wondering if they’re even allowed to ask for so much. Yes, you are, and consider this your sign.

As Madonna said, “you won’t get what you don’t ask.”
So, start asking. Start demanding. Give yourself permission. Make a commitment, a mental investment. This one step can make all the difference between a swift recovery and the persistent feeling of being stuck and unsure about what is missing.
